St Matthew's is part of the of the Scottish Episcopal Church in the Edinburgh Diocese and can be described as offering a 'traditional form of worship'.
Most of our congregation come from Roslin, surrounding Midlothian and Edinburgh areas. We are an inclusive and welcoming group who are famously friendly and enjoy welcoming new people from far and wide, whether it is to join our congregation on a regular basis or visitors who choose to attend services when they visit the Chapel.
We have a small but dedicated team of Clergy and Laity who work together to ensure our congregation and our many visitors are welcomed and supported in their journey in faith.
The Revd Dr Joe Roulston, who has spent all of his 30 year ministry in the Edinburgh Diocese, is our Priest in Charge. Recently retired as a Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, Joe is a music lover, avid reader and a great fan of Sherlock Holmes. He lives in Edinburgh and is married with 4 children.
Harry Stoddart, Lay Reader, runs his high street business in Hawick during the week, and is married to Helen. They have 3 sons and 4 grandchildren. Harry's interests are theology, spirituality and prayer, history, sociology, film making, working dog training, baking and classic convertible cars.
Isla Shanks, Lay Reader, followed careers as a Librarian and a Social Worker. She is now retired and lives in the village of Roslin with her husband Ian. They have two sons and enjoy life with their extended families. Isla is an avid reader and walker, and has been closely involved in various local rambling groups.
Our Prayer Ministry Leader, Rosie Wild, first attended St Matthew's some 50 years ago as a student. Later, she remembers the congregation sometimes consisted of four people, wrapped in blankets and clutching hot water bottles in the cold and damp! Today we celebrate a growing congregation in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
